Abstract
743,411. Telescopic hydraulic dampers. GIRLING, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1954 [Jan. 5, 1953], No. 250/53. Class 108 (3). [Also in Group XXXI] In a suspension unit for motor cycles comprising a direct - acting telescopic hydraulic damper having a recuperation chamber in the form of a cylindrical shell 13 enclosing at least the lower part of the damper cylinder 10 and a helical compression spring 23, the spring abuts between a collar 24 fixed on the piston-rod 12 of the damper and an abutment 19 formed by an inward step in diameter of the outer surface of the recuperation chamber, the diameter of the outer surface of the spring being not greater than that of the recuperation chamber over the lower part of the damper. As shown in Fig. 1, a piston 11 carried by the piston-rod 12 is provided with valves which control the flow of liquid between opposite ends of the cylinder 10. Valves in a fitting 15 welded to the shell 13 control the passage of liquid between the cylinder 10 and the recuperation chamber. Openings 22 in the shell 13 allow the recuperation liquid to flow into the shell 20. The spring 23 is enclosed in a telescopic cover formed by thin-walled tubes 38, 26, the wall 38 being welded to the ring 19. The outer tube 26 has an inturned flange 27 held between the spring and the ring 24. In a modification shown in Fig. 2 the recuperation chamber is a sleeve 30 of stepped diameter. The spring 23 abuts against a shoulder 31. The inner tube 38 has an inturned flange 32 held between the spring and the shoulder 31. In the further modification shown in Fig. 3, the recuperation chamber is formed by two sleeve members 33, 34, welded together by a flange 35 on the member 34. A baffle ring 37 is welded to the member 33 to minimize the agitation of the liquid in the recuperation chamber.
