Abstract

1318191 Strut type suspensions ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 19 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969 22 Jan 1970] 41309/69 and 3143/70 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] When a conventional tube-within-a-tube shock absorber used as a vehicle suspension strut fails, the old piston and inner tube are removed and a replacement tube-within-a-tube shock absorber (depicted as a unit in Fig. 1, not shown, but see Division F2) is fitted inside the old outer tube 52 and secured to it by a gland screw 54. The replacement shock absorber has a piston rod guide 24 which is formed between its ends with a radial flange 26 constituting a direct or indirect (via an 0-ring 50, the Fig. of Provisional Specification 3,143/70 not shown) abutment for a cylindrical collar 30 which surrounds part of the guide and is circumferentially attached by welding to the outer tube 12. The collar 30 is an interference fit in the outer tube, and a press or interference fit on the guide. The collar 30 and guide 24 may be integral.
