Abstract

A method of treating aluminium bronze consisting of 8-12 per cent Al, up to 8 per cent of one or more of the elements Fe, Ni, Co, and Mn, and up to 0,3 per cent of one or more of the elements As, Sb, Bi, Cr, Pb, Mg, P, Si, Sn, and Zn, the remainder being copper, comprises heating the bronze to 800-1050 DEG C. to bring it to the beta condition and quenching to below 600 DEG C. prior to reheating for final hot working. After quenching and prior to hot working the bronze may be soaked at 400-800 DEG C. and before heating to 800-1050 DEG C. the bronze may be hot worked at 900 DEG C. A finished article of the bronze may be tempered or age hardened at a temperature not above the working temperature.
