Abstract

743,247. Locking nuts. PISCHEK, F. Aug. 21, 1952, No. 20980/52. Class 89 (1). In means for locking a nut on a bolt &c., a washer a is prevented from rotating relatively to the bolt and has radial tongues 7 spaced equiangularly, and a plate c has a polygonal opening 8 to fit the nut and a series of notches 9 or apertures 9<SP>1</SP> to receive one of the tongues 7, the angular spacing of the notches &c. having a vernier relation to the spacing of the tongues so that engagement of a tongue and notch &c. may be secured in any position of the nut. The clearance between the faces of the opening 8 and the sides of the nut is such that the plate c may be rotated through an angle α relatively to the nut, and the angular spacing of the tongues and notches are respectively unequal multiples of α to secure the vernier effect, so that in any position of the parts after tightening the nut, one of the tongues will be within an angle α of one of the notches and rotation of the plate c within the limits of its clearance on the nut will produce exact registering of that tongue and notch. Both notches 9 and apertures 9<SP>1</SP> may be provided on plate a, Fig. 2, and the notches &c. may be slightly wider than the tongues 7. Rotation of washer a may be prevented by a bent-over flange 2, Figs. 7 and 8, or the flat edge of the washer may engage part of the work, such as the fish-plate of a rail-coupling. The tongue 7 registering with a notch &c. is bent up and clinched as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 and the tongues originate from within the arcuate edge of the washer, as shown in Fig. 1, to prevent fracture during bending.
