Abstract

742,864. Curving sheets. ANSTEE, R. R., EDMUNDS, C. L., and SMITH, V. E. Aug. 5, 1953 [Sept. 8, 1952], No. 22507/52. Class 83 (4). A sheet-bending machine for making tubes comprises a rotatable forming roller adapted to co-operate with a forming block to bend a sheet into the shape of a tube by drawing the sheet between the block and the roller. A tapered roller 1 rotated by a handle 6, co-operates with a complementary forming block 5a, 5b, 5c to bend a pre-formed blank 8, whose bent-over edge 8a is engaged in a groove 7 in the roller, into the form of a tapered tube about the roller. An auxiliary block 10 is hinged to the forming block and adapted to be clamped thereon by a screw 14. Two pairs of steadying,rolls 9a, 9b are mounted in the block 10 to engage and support the roller 1, being held in place by cams 11. On rotating the cams 11 by levers 12 the rolls are permitted to retract as the sheet-metal blank passes under them. The roller 1 is slidable axially in bearings 2, 3 so that the smaller end may be withdrawn from the bearing 3 and the roller tilted to allow the formed tube to be withdrawn.
