Abstract

742,851. Feeding nails &c. head upwards. BRITISH ERMETO CORPORATION, Ltd., and JONES, S. H. Feb. 16, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1949], No. 29359/49. Class 117. [Also in Groups XVII and XXX] Nails or other headed objects are affixed head upwards on a paper, fabric or like band by causing their shanks to pierce the band, and the objects then moved to processing, e.g. spray colour coating means by travel of the band. In Fig. 1 upholstery nails first marshalled resting on their heads in rows on one or more side by side conveyer belts 1 as described in Specification 742,874, [Group XXX], are moved into contact with so as to pierce a paper band 6 continuously driven between rollers 5, 18. The band 6 passes over rollers 8, 9 and a support 10 all grooved to allow clearance for the shanks of the nails, and the heads of the nails stand clear of the band facilitating coating by a spray device 13, finally the nails being dried by passing through an oven 14 and removed from the paper band by a stripping device 16 depositing them in a bin 17. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the nails are lowered under gravity from the belt 1 by one or more slotted guides which invert them and a roller presses the nails through the paper band, with their heads spaced from the paper by the thickness of the slotted guides. The support 10 may consist of longitudinal spaced wires. In Fig. 5 a presser foot 28 oscillated perpendicular to the band 6 receives one or more nails from a chute 26 in notches 27 and sticks them successively into the band. The feed of the nails to the foot 28 may be continuous or synchronously controlled. The foot 28 and band 6 may be arranged parallel to the chute 26. The paper band 6 may be cut into lengths on the support 10 before processing the nails.
