Abstract

A mass of resin is foamed by the action of a foaming agent to produce a mass that will not substantially expand on subsequent extrusion and is in a partly hardened state. This foamed mass is then extruded through one or more orifices and reduced to granules, and the granules are heated until they are substantially completely hardened. The foamed resin may be made by beating an acid catalyst with an acid-resisting foaming agent, e.g. an alcohol sulphonate, to form a stiff foam and beating urea formaldehyde or cold-setting phenolic resin into the foam. To suppress the odour of formalin, very fine sawdust or proteins may be added to the foamed mass. The heating may be by hot air, with or without infra-red or high-frequency heating. The reduction to granules may be effected by rotating discs or jets of fluid. The hardened granules may be made non-inflammable by adding thereto heavy metal salts, gypsum or waterglass; or may be protectively coated with bitumen pitch; or may be mixed with water and cement or cement-sand mixture to make light-weight bricks; or may be mixed with a cold-hardening synthetic resin and a catalyst, and shaped or poured into insulation cavities.ALSO:A mass of resin is foamed by the action of a foaming agent to produce a mass that will not substantially expand on subsequent extrusion and is in a partly hardened state.
