742,564. Speed governors. KURETSCHKA, F. Nov. 23, 1953 [Nov. 21, 1952], No. 32456/53. Class 57 The speed of a poppet-valve controlled reciprocating steam engine is governed by axial displacement of a cam 7 or cam shaft which controls the valves and is connected to a centrifugal governor by a pivoted linkage. The cam 7 actuates a tappet roller 22 for an inlet valve and has an attachment 6 in slidably splined engagement with a driven toothed wheel 3 which has a radial guide 11 to receive a pair of spring-loaded weights 9, 10. A pair of bell-crank levers 15 pivotally mounted at 17 on the toothed wheel 3 are connected by forked arms 16 to sliders 19 on the weights 9, 10 and by shackles 21 to the attachment 6. When the engine speed increases, the weights 9, 10 move radially outwards and displace the cam 7 to the right to reduce the period for which the inlet valve is open. At maximum speed, a portion 23 of circular profile becomes operative and the inlet valve remains closed. The toothed wheel 3 is mounted in a bearing 2 in the engine casing 1.
