Abstract

586,546. Rotary engines. MORRISON, A. C. Sept. 7, 1945, No. 456. [Class 110 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A hydraulic variable-speed gear comprises a sliding vane type pump including a rotor 1 on the driving shaft carrying vanes 4 engaging an eccentric annulus 8, adjustable for varying the pump capacity, and mounted within a reaction member 9 forming an abutment for sliding vanes 18 carried by a motor casing 14 fast with the driven shaft. The adjustable annulus and reaction member are parted for the passage of liquid between the pump and motor casings. Adjustment of the annulus may be effected manually or automatically by a vane motor 23 carried thereby and subjected to pump and main motor, pressures acting on opposite sides of the vane. Sensitivity of motor 23 may be varied by manual adjustment of a spring loading a valve 25 in the supply from the main motor. Alternatively adjustment of the annulus may be effected by vehicle speed and throttle control, e.g. by means of a governor and means responsive to the depression in the induction pipe of the driving engine. The reaction member 9 is mounted in a one-way roller clutch in the gear casing to enable it to rotate in one direction only. Bypass valves 7 in the pump rotor are held open by springs until the speed reaches a predetermined value.
