Abstract

781,784. Regulating. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Dec. 29, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1953], No. 37525/54. Class 7(6) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] A control system for a motor vehicle, such as a railcar, driven by an internal combustion engine 1, e.g. a Diesel engine, and employing a continuously variable ratio gear 4 which may be of the friction type as shown, or alternatively may be of the hydrostatic type, comprises a fluid pressure operated servo motor 13 to establish the ratio of the gear, an engine driven speed governor 21, and a control member 25, connected through links 26, 27 to the engine fuel control means 29, and to the output side of the speed governor 21; and to a slide valve 11 controlling the servo-motor. The position of the fulcrum point M of the control member 25 can be varied by hand operation of a crank 17, and the tension of a spring 19 in the speed governor 21 can be varied by operation of a crank 18, the two cranks operating by electro-pneumatic means (not further described). The friction gear shown consists of driving and driven rollers 5, 6 engaging idlers 8 on supporting shafts 7 tilted by the servomotor 13 to change the velocity ratio. The setting of the crank 18 determines the normal number of revolutions per minute at which the engine rotates, and the crank 17 determines the normal amount of fuel supplied to the engine. A change in the torque required at the driving wheels of the vehicle results in a change in both the amount of fuel supplied to the engine and also in the ratio of the gear 4. When equilibrium is finally restored in the system following the change in torque, the ratio of the gear has been so varied that the rate of delivery for which the fuel control means 29 is adjusted is the same as it was before the change of torque took place.
