A closed system sanitary unit comprises a bowl connected to a settling tank, means for drawing clear liquid from the settling tank to effect flushing of the bowl, separate rotatable means for agitating the contents of the settling tank to effect disintegration of the solid matter therein, and means for sealing and opening the discharge outlet of the bowl. When in use, pressure on the seat 27 is transmitted to the arm 20 through the arm 29, thus opening the ball valve 18 and enabling excreta to pass from the bowl 7 into the settling tank 9. A time delay switch is then operated and the electric pump 32 is brought into action to pump clear liquid, which has filtered through the partition 46 and gauze screen 44, into the bowl by way of the cylinder 51 and pipe 53. The weight of the liquid acting on the piston 55 causes the ball valve, which closed when the pressure on the seat was removed, to open, thus allowing the flushing liquid to pass from the bowl into the settling tank. Prior to discharging the contents of the settling tank through discharge pipe 13, any solid matter which has not disintegrated under the action of the chemical solution added to the water in the settling tank before use, is broken up by the radial cutter blades 37 which are actuated by engaging the shaft 36 with the pump shaft 35 by means of clutch 42. The settling tank is then refilled with fresh water to which some disinfectant and/or deodorizer has preferably been added. Two modifications of this unit are described, one being adapted for manual operation and the other incorporating a cistern for storing the flushing liquid.
