Abstract
1429185 Sanitary closets WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 10 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 18644/72 Heading E1C In a recirculating pump-flushed closet, the liquid and waste flushed from the pan is received in a first region of a receiver from which it flows through a filter to a second region, the flow path including a fluid-flow restricting means which sets a slower rate of flow through the filter than the draw-off rate effectable by the flushing pump. In the preferred embodiment shown, which is for fitting to a railway carriage, the interior of a casing 1 is divided by a partition 131 into two chambers in one of which is fitted a receptacle incorporating a filter 111 and forming the first region 3 into which waste and flushing liquid from the pan is received. The other chamber forms the second region 12 which communicates with a third region surrounding the filter 111 by a restricted aperture 13 in the partition 131, the aperture 13 causing the liquid to pass through the filter at a slower rate than that at which the recirculation pump 14, Fig. 4, sucks it out of region 12 to flush the pan. As a result, the power to the pump motor can be controlled by a level-sensing switch 171 such that the pump remains operative only until the liquid level in region 12 has dropped below the switch 171. In the preferred embodiment, however, the electric circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) is more complex since the toilet includes a macerator 7 which automatically macerates the contents of the region 3 and empties the interior of the casing into a discharge arrangement 8, 9, 10 when the liquid level in region 12 rises sufficiently to operate a switch 161, or the level in this region rises sufficiently to operate a further, optional, switch (181, Fig. 5a, not shown), after which region 12 and the third region are automatically refilled with fresh flushing fluid to the level of switch 171 by opening a solenoid valve 194 communicating the contents of a flushing liquid storage tank 192 with a pipe 21 having a brand 211. At the same time, a dosing pump 193 is energised to supply a quantity of disinfectant from a tank 191 in the casing 1 to the region 3. The circuit includes a timer, a foot-operated switch 20 to initiate a flush, and a dooroperated switch operated by the closet door whereby the emptying and refilling of the toilet occurs only when the closet has been vacated.
