Abstract

742,518. Adhesion testing machines. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Nov. 25, 1954 [Dec. 11, 1953], No. 34505/53. Class 106 (2). A machine for testing the adhesion between two materials A1, A2 comprises a beam 1, having a high frequency of oscillation rigidly secured at one end, carrying a clamp 12 for one material, and having damping means 3, 4, a pointer 5 extending from the free end of the beam associated with a recording surface 7, a second clamp 13 for the other material and means for drawing the second clamp away from the first clamp at a constant speed. The clamp 12 is suspended from the beam by a knife edge 11. To the second clamp 13 is secured a wire 14 passing over a pulley to the output spindle 26 of a gear-box 25 driven by a motor 24. The pointer 5 carries a stylus 6 which bears on a sooted glass plate 7. The second clamp 13 can be drawn away from the first clamp 12 at constant speed by means of the motor 24 which is geared also by pulleys 33, 29 and wire 28 to the sooted glass plate which is carried by a beam 8 pivoted at 9 in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the beam 1 at a speed proportional to the speed of separation of the clamps. As the test proceeds the variation in the stripping force between the layers A1, A2 is indicated by a trace made on the sooted glass plate by the stylus 6. The trace is magnified on an optical projector for examination and measurement. A trip 31 on the wire 14 actuates a mercury switch 32 to switch off the motor 24. The clamp 13 is returned to the top of its travel by a weight 23 and.wires 21.
