Abstract
644,807. Electric indicating systems. SCOLES, G. J., TODD, K. W., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1947, No. 26941. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XL (b)] In apparatus for determining the rotational speed of a member, a rotor, which rotates at a speed proportional to that of the member, controls light passing from a source to a photocell so that the cell is activated at a frequency proportional to the speed of the rotating member. As shown, light from a source 1 passes to a photo-cell 3 by way of a light guide 2 which may be of " Perspex " (Registered Trade Mark). The end of a rotating shaft 5 is cut away so that the light to the photo-cell is periodically interrupted. The shaft may also be arranged as shown in Fig. 1A so that the cell receives a pair of unequal impulses in each cycle enabling the direction of rotation of the shaft to be determined. In a further embodiment the shaft is situated at the far end of the light guide and reflect light back along it to a photocell situated beside the light source. The construction of the shaft end is shown in Fig. 3, surface 12 and 13 being reflecting and again applying different impulses to the photo-cell. The output of the photo-cell is applied to the " Y " plates of a cathode-ray tube, a known circuit arrangement providing a time base on the " X " plates. The auxiliary deflection of the trace appears at one end or the other of the trace depending on the direction of rotation of the shaft. The circuit described is a modification of that described in Specification 644,810, which may be used to measure the output frequency of the light-sensitive device.
