Visco-elastic properties of strip material, two pieces 14, 14a, Fig. 3, of which are attached to fixed supports 23, 24 and to ferromagnetic plates 15, 15a on a frame 18 which is suspended at (19), Fig. 2 (not shown) are determined by vibrating the frame along the axis of the strips and measuring the frequency dependence of the amplitude of oscillation, (i. e. plotting a frequency response). Oscillations are induced electromagnetically, e. g. by means of a coil 16, and the amplitude may be measured by an inductive pickup 17, while a dynamometer 25 measures the tension on the strips. The supports 23, 24, carrying the outer ends of the strips are displaceable in opposite directions on a screw spindle (27) to take up any permanent deformation of the strips and thereby to maintain the tension constant. The screw spindle (27) may be driven at a constant speed to give a constant speed of deformation of the specimen during the test.
