Abstract

1376104 Measuring visco-elastic properties NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Dec 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 42962/70 Heading G1S Apperatus for measuring the dynamic viscoelastic properties of a liquid or solid material comprises upper and lower platens 2, 1 spaced to contain a sample to be measured, means for applying a high-frequency sinusoidal rotational oscillation to the lower platen 1, which is supported by at least one torsion member 7 and means for measuring the frequency and amplitude of movement of each platen, and the phase difference between the oscillations of the platens. In the illustrated embodiment the lower platen 1 is carried by a holder 8 supported by leaf springs 7, 11 secured respectively to a crosspiece 5 and base 4 of a framework 3. An electromagnet 16 oscillates a coil 17 secured to the holder 8 and resulting movements of the platen 1 are detected by a capacitance transducer which applies a signal to a digital voltmeter. The values of the frequency, phase, and amplitude of the movements imparted to the platen 2 are measured by known means from which values the visco-elastic properties of the sample are determined.
