Abstract

742,478. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Feb. 16, 1954 [Nov. 17, 1952], No. 28904/52. Class 112. In a sewing machine of the type in which the needle meets the work at an acute angle, as in stitching diagonally through the abutting sides of leather cases, a needle-guiding member is adapted to be moved towards the point at which the needle will penetrate the work before the needle penetrates the work and to be retracted after the needle has entered the work. The work 5 is pressed against an abutment 4 by a clamp arm 6. The needle-guiding member 7 is in the form of a plunger slidable in guideways 8 and biased away from the work by a spring 9. The needle-bar 3A carries a cam 15 in the form of a bar parallel to the needle 3 and tapered at its upper end. One arm 10 of a double-armed lever pivoted at 12 is engageable with the cam. The other arm 11 of the lever is adjustably engaged with the needle-guide by means of a screw 13. When the needle-bar is raised, the cam engages the cam follower to rock the lever and thereby move the needle-guide towards the work. When the needle descends, the needleguide prevents deflection of the needle as the point of the latter enters the work. Continued descent of the needle brings the tapered portion of the cam opposite the cam follower to allow spring 9 to move the needle-guide away from the work by rocking the lever. A pin 16 carried by arm 10 is arranged to engage the parallel portion of the cam for stopping the movement of the needle-guide when the latter is clear of the needle.
