Abstract

3177. British United Shoe Machinery Co., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. Feb. 6. Button-hole sewing-machines; thread-cutters and thread-end holders.-In a button-hole sewing or other sewing-machine operating to form overedge or like stitches, means such as a device to cut and hold the free end of the thread at the completion of one set of stitches is provided to secure the covering of the thread end by the initial stitches of the next set. The device is shown as applied to a machine of the type described in Specifications 13,877/12 and 3293/13. The thread-engaging means comprises a pair of jaws 26, 28, Figs. 1 and 4, mounted in a support 32 carried by a pin 34 sliding in a bearing 36. The jaw 26 is pressed forwards by a spring 46, and is mounted to slide in the support 32 over a stationary cutter 30 secured in the support. The jaw 26 is raised by a bar 50 and is held in retracted position by a spring 54. A spring 52 presses the jaws 26, 28 against the cutter 30. The device is mounted to rise and fall with the work clamp 10, and is operated by cams 58, 60 on a gear 16. When one set of stitches is completed, the device is operated by the cam 58 to advance into position to seize the upper thread. Further movement of the cam 58 upon the stoppage of the stitch-forming devices causes the bar 50 to be retracted to grip the thread against the jaw 26, and subsequently to carry it against the cutter 30 and sever it. The free end of the thread is then held until the work has been moved into the next position, when, the device having assumed its normal position as shown in Fig. 7, the thread is held so that the initial stitches of the next set are formed over it. The cam 60 then opens the jaws 26, 28 and releases the thread end, which moves inwardly towards the buttonhole and is completely covered. Reference is made to Specification 24,523/14.
