Abstract

107,816. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Co.). July 13, 1916. Addition to 3177/14. Thread-cutters and thread-end holders.- The thread - cutting and holding device described in the parent Specification is provided with a finger 66 which is notched to engage the thread end between the sewing point and the grippers 26 to ensure that the waste end shall be covered by the initial stitches of the seam. The finger 66 is clamped in the free end of a link 70 pivotally attached to the end of an arm 72 projecting from a pivot mounted in the support 32 of the thread cutting and holding mechanism, and is held in retracted position by a spring 86. A projection 74 on the arm 72 is engaged by a lever 76, which is engaged by one end of a resilient plunger 78, the other end of which is engaged by a cam 82 on the rotary carrier of the upper needle. The cam is so arranged that, during the first few stitches, the plunger 78 will be moved backwards to bring the finger into thread-guiding position in contact with the work as shown in Fig. 5.
