Abstract
741,832. Articulated vehicles. ADROLIC ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. and SMITH, D. M. Feb.3, 1954 [Feb.7, 1953; May 18, 1953], Nos.3520/53 and 13835/53. Classes 79(3) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] Articulation of a motor-driven vehicle and a trailer about their connection 21b is prevented by a piston and cylinder assembly 6 pivoted at its ends 11, 19 to the vehicle 20 and trailer 15, passage of fluid displaced upon articulation being prevented by a valve 23 under the control of the vehicle foot brake. As shown, the ends of the cylinder are inter-connected by pipes 29, 30 and a casing 22 for the valve 23 which is normally urged by a spring 32 into the position shown in Fig. 2 in which the pipes 29, 30 are inter-connected by an annular recess 31 in the valve 23 to permit free articulation between the vehicle and trailer. An extension 26 of the casing 22 contains a piston 25 carried by a valve rod 24 and is connected by a pipe 28 to the master cylinder 27 of the tractor hydraulic braking system. When the foot pedal of the braking system is applied hard on, pressure is transmitted through the pipe 28 to move the valve 23 thus interrupting the fluid-flow between the pipes 29, 30 and hence preventing relative articulation of the tractor and trailer about the connection 21b. The braking system may be pneumatically operated. According to the first Provisional Specification the foot brake may be applied to reduce vehicle speed without operating the valve.
