Abstract
741,719. Controlling aircraft. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1949 [Aug. 9, 1948], No. 20952/48. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] The wings 16 of an aircraft or other flying body are adjustable during flight in azimuth, angle of incidence, and dihedral angle. The wings are freely strapped to eccentric discs 20 that are rotatable with tubular structures 14, 15, pivotally mounted on body framework members 11, 12. Rotation of tubes 14, 15, differentially or in unison, by motors 32 varies the angle of incidence and (to a lesser or greater extent according to the displacement of the discs 20) the dihedral angle. Top and bottom discs are 180 degrees out of phase. A separate motor drives a worm 22 and segments 25, 26, to displace the wings substantially in azimuth. Specifications 595,464 and 741,717 are referred to.
