741,718. Controlling aircraft. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd. July 4, 1949 [.July 7, 1948], No. 18256/48. Class 4. [Also in Group XXI] The wings 10 of an aircraft are adjustable in flight about azimuthal axes X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> and also about spanwise axes on bearings 13. Inboard extensions (or limbs), 19, 20 of the wings carry thrust bearing rollers 21, moving in four curved tracks 22. Four motors 29, each mounted on one of the limbs 19, 20, drive the respective limbs selectively through single-tooth worms 27 and fixed sets of rollers 28 to move the wings about their azimuthal and/or spanwise axes. End play is provided in the bearings 13. Collapsible aerofoil sections of the leading and trailing edges of each wing are pivoted to the wing at 37 and urged by springs 38 to provide a satisfactory aerodynamic fairing.
