Abstract
842,363. Aircraft. VICKERS ARMSTRONGS (AIRCRAFT) Ltd., and WALLIS, B. N. Sept. 9, 1957 [Sept. 17, 1956], No. 28424/56. Class 4. Jet propulsion units C1 on an aircraft having swept-back wings B are mounted on the wings with their mass-centres and centres-of-pressure in advance of the flexural axes of the wings and are movable about pivot axes substantially parallel to the OY and OZ axes of the aircraft to effect control in pitch, roll and yaw. They are mounted in pairs one above and one below a wing B on a common carrier E. Powered means rotate this carrier about 3-4 (substantially the OZ axis) for control in yaw. Similar means rotate the units on these carriers about 5-6 (substantially the OY axis), in usison on both wings for control in pitch and differentially for control in roll. The units C1 may propel a fixedwing aircraft, Fig. 3, or one with variablesweep wings, Fig. 5, as disclosed in Specification 832,760. In the latter case the angular position of the units C1 is automatically adjusted to maintain the direction of thrust when the wing-sweep angle is altered during flight.
