Abstract

741,410. Latches. CHICAGO FORGING & MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 22, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 35632/53. Class 44. In a latch mechanism for securing together two relatively movable parts of the kind comprising a fixed keeper 36 mounted on one of the parts, which is arranged to enter a slot formed in a spring-loaded rotatable latch C mounted on the other part and thus turn the latch against the action of the spring 82 into an angular latching position in which it is held by a detent which engages the latch, the disengagement of the detent from the latch for the purpose of allowing the latch to rotate to the keeper-releasing position is effected by rotation of a cam 114 mounted within a cam housing and against which the detent bears. As shown, the housing in which the cam is mounted consists of part of a member 38 on which the detent and latch C are also mounted and a support plate 108 which is riveted to the member 38. The cam is rotated by a handle against the pressure of a spring 118 through a shaft 104. The detent is pivotably mounted and is urged into contact with the cam by a spring 94 and it has a pin 102 which engages a notch 78 in the latch C which is so shaped and arranged that when the pin 102 is in the notch the latch C is held in its keeper-engaging position against the pressure of the spring 82. In a modification, the detent is slidably mounted instead of being pivoted and its lower edge engages a notch in the latch C. Specification 671,605 is referred to.
