Abstract
732,190. Latches. STANDARD PRODUCTS CO. June 3, 1953 [June 11, 1952], No. 15310/53. Class 44. Locking mechanism for releasably retaining two structures in closed position comprises a plate-like element adapted to be secured to one structure, a shaft journalled through the plate-like element and extending normal thereto, a locking member of disc-like form rigidly mounted on one end of the shaft and having a single peripheral recess therein, a shouldered member rigidly mounted on the other end of the shaft, a detent member movable mounted on the plate-like element for detaining engagement with the shoulder of the shouldered member, resilient means for normally maintaining the detent member in engagement with the shouldered member, manually operable means for moving the detent member out of engagement with the shoulder of the shouldered member, and keeper means adapted to be secured to the other of the structures for locking relationship with the disc-like locking member in the releasable retention of the structures in closed position. In the arrangement shown, as applied to releasably securing a luggage compartment cover A to a motor vehicle body B an upper part of a housing 21, is secured to the inner wall of the cover A and an angularly disposed lower part is arranged to be generally parallel with the structure B when the cover is in closed position. A disc-like locking member 31 is mounted on the outer end of a shaft 30 journalled in the lower part of the housing for co-operation with a keeper 33 mounted on the structure B, the locking member being provided with a peripheral notch 39 for engagement by a projection 40 of the keeper. A disc-like member 44 is rigidly mounted on the inner end of shaft 30 and is provided with shoulders 46 and 47 for engagement in the closed and open positions, respectively of the cover A, with a spring- loaded lever 45. Rotary movement of member 44 is limited by a lug 52 on the housing base 21 and a projection on the member 44, and movement of the lever 45 is limited by a lug 54. The member 44 is also formed with a notch 58 for engagement by a spring 55. In operation, closure of the cover A on to the structure B, effects rotation of the member 31 from the dotdash line position in Fig. 2 to the full line position by engagement of the projection 40 with the notch 39 in which position the member 31 is locked by the engagement of the lever 45 with the shoulder 46 of the member 44. The lever is released to permit opening of the cover A by anticlockwise rotation of a finger 63 of a cup-shaped member 62 which latter is engaged by a spindle 68 operatively connected with a key operated lock 69. In a modification, (Fig. 10, not shown), the upper end of lever 45 is curved and engages the finger 63 which extends upwardly from the member 62, in this case the finger being movable in a clockwise direction to move the lever between fixed stops on the housing. In a further modification (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown), movement of the lever is effected by means of a push button having an inner end plunger-portion which is moved into or out of alignment with a cooperating end of the lever by means of a key operated lock.
