Abstract

740,361. Electrically-released switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Aug. 10, 1953 [Aug. 18, 1952], No. 20712/52. Class 38(5) A circuit-breaker comprises a contact carrying arm 1 pivotally supported at 6 on a magnetic arm 4 mounted on a fixed pivot 5, a tension spring 7 being connected to the arm 1 below the pivot 6. To close the breaker an electromagnet 9 is energized to attract its plunger 10 pivotally connected to a bell crank lever 11 pivoted at 12, whereby a roller 13 on the lever 11 rotates the arm 1 counterclockwise about pivot 6 until the arm is arrested by engaging pivot 5 acting as a stop. Both arms 1, 4 then pivot clockwise about pivot 5 and the arm 4 is held by an electromagnet 8. It is arranged for magnet 9 to be de-energized at this stage whereby the lever 11 retracts from the arm 1 and the arm is moved by spring 7 so that contact 2 engages fixed contact 3. To prevent the shock of contact engagement from unseating the arm 4 from the magnet 8, the arm 1 is given a retarded movement by connecting it through a link 14 to the outer crank 19 of a dashpot 15, the crank 19 being mounted on a shaft 16 carrying an inner crank 17 connected to a piston rod 18. High speed opening of the contacts 2, 3 upon de-energization of the magnet 8 is, however, enhanced by the dashpot, since it discourages pivotting of the arm 1 about pivot 6 and instead causes the arms 1, 4 to pivot about 5, the contact 2 thereby having a greater movement.
