739,683. Non-linear amplifiers. TIME, Inc. April 21, 1954 [May 28, 1953], No. 11551/54. Class 40 (6). A non-linear portion is inserted in an otherwise linear characteristic by applying the input 17, Fig. 1, over a voltage dropping device 19 to the grid of an amplifier 10, a biased electrical apparatus such as the valve 25 coming into operation at a predetermined level so that current flows through the resistor 19 and valve 25 and the rate of rise of the grid potential of valve 10 and the associated anode current falls, Fig. 1A. The valve 25 is biased to the non- conducting state by battery 41. At a higher input, the normally non-conducting valve 24 conducts, the fall in anode potential being fed over potential divider 34 to the grid of valve 25 to decrease its conductivity. At a sufficiently high input voltage, valve 25 is cut off and thus the current flow through resistor 19, so that the linear characteristic is restored.
