873,630. Valve amplifying circuits. INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORPORATION. Nov. 22, 1957 [Dec. 18, 1956], No. 36827/60. Divided out of 873,629. Class 40(6) A direct current amplifier comprises first and second electronic devices 24, 25 each having electron emitter and electron collector discharge electrodes and a control electrode; a bridge circuit having two arms in parallel across a DC supply, the first arm comprising a voltage divider impedance having two potentiometer taps separated by a portion of the impedance, the first tap being connected to one of the discharge electrodes 50 of the first electronic device and one of the two taps being a variable potentiometer tap 27, the second arm comprising the discharge electrodes of the second electronic device 25 and an impedance 31, 32 having an intermediate tap 33; and a load impedance 35 connecting the second potentiometer tap to the intermediate tap. The input is applied to the control electrode 51 of the electron device 24 and the output is taken between the second potentiometer tap and the intermediate tap. The amplifier described forms part of a measuring system (Specification 873,629) used as a transmission type of thickness gauge. The output from the detector 10 is fed through a high resistance 15 to provide the input voltage for the amplifier, and the load impedance 35 of the amplifier includes a meter 34 in series with it and a sensitivity control 36 for the meter 34. A biasing circuit 16 is also included in the input circuit to oppose the input voltage to give a zero reading on the meter 34. The anode 52 of the valve 24 is connected to the control grid 54 of the valve 25, and the anode of the valve is connected back via resistor 38 to the screen of the valve 24 thus providing positive feed back to increase the amplifier gain. The anode load resistor 29 of the valve 24 is shunted by a capacitor 30 so that the time constant of this RC combination forms a stabilizer in the feed back loop to prevent large changes on the grid of valve 25.
