Abstract

739,557. Rotary converting machines. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. June 2, 1954 [June 8, 1953], No. 16296/54. Class 35. Alternating current of substantially constant frequency is derived from the commutator of a D.C. machine by means of rotating brushes drawn round by brush friction against a speedresponsive governor. The machine, which is intended for use on motor vehicles is normally driven from the engine through a free-wheel clutch which ensures rotation in the correct direction. The armature is connected to a commutator 14 having a radial surface engaged by the rotating A.C. brushes 16, and a peripheral surface engaged by fixed brushes 18 which are used to supply D.C. and act through the conventional voltage regulator to control the voltage of the machine. When the engine is stationary, D.C. current may be fed to brushes 18 to drive the machine and generate A.C. in the usual way, the free-wheel clutch disconnecting the drive from the engine. The rotating brush carriage has slip-rings 19 for delivery of the alternating current to brushes 20 and the speed of rotation is governed by means of a weighted spring 21 which is centrifugally pressed against a friction surface 22 at a certain speed. Alternatively, or in addition, an eddycurrent braking disc or a wind-drag fan blade may be used.
