Abstract
896,211. Alternators and electric motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1960 [Nov. 11, 1959], No. 38293/59. Class 35. In an alternator or synchronous motor in which, in order to avoid the use of a commutator and associated brushgear for feeding direct current to an excitation winding on the machine from a winding in which an alternating potential is generated, rectifiers are mounted on and rotate with the rotor of the machine, an annulus 1 is secured around and projects radially from the rotor shaft, not shown, and is provided with substantially radial angularlyspaced blades 2 ... 5 having platforms 6 on which the rectifiers are mounted at or near the inner radius of the annulus. The platforms are mounted between either adjacent or selected pairs of blades and may leave a gap between themselves and the annulus in order to permit a cooling air flow across the annulus. The annulus may be a single piece and may form the star point of the rectifiers, or it may comprise sectors having radial gaps therebetween and connected to respective rectifiers, and is insulatingly mounted on a rotor shaft flange or lugs projecting therefrom. The air impelled by the blades not only cools the rectifiers but may be adequate to cool the whole machine.
