Abstract

1,106,989. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 1 Aug., 1966 [16 Sept., 1965], No. 34405/66. Heading H2A. A dynamo-electric machine, e.g. a turbinedriven generator, is of the type having an airtight casing 1 filled with cooling gas, e.g. hydrogen, a stator core 2, a rotor 4 defining an air gap 11 therewith and means such as fans 10 for recirculating and heat exchangers 9 for cooling the gas; the assembly includes pluralities of gas inlet ducts 12, and gas outlet ducts 13 axially spaced therefrom, on the rotor, a plurality of diagonally extending cooling passages inside the rotor windings connecting the inlet and outlet ducts, means including radial stator ducts 5a for furnishing cooling gas to inlet zones 14 of the air gap, and similar ducts 5b for conducting gas away from outlet zones 15; the ducts 12 and 13 are shaped to pump the gas along the cooling passages. It is characterized by stator baffle portions 17, each co-operating with a rotor baffle portion 18 between inlet zones and outlet zones. Preferably baffle portion 17 is of foam rubber and is interrupted at the bottom to leave a gap (for a rotor skid) of approximately 60 degrees angular extent. Preferably, portion 18 is a complete non-magnetic steel ring shrunk on to the rotor. Alternatively, either the stator baffle portion or the rotor baffle portion may be omitted, the remaining portion then being radially extended appropriately.
