Abstract
Yarn cops or bobbins are moistened by passing them through a chamber wherein water is sprayed on to them, the cops or bobbins being conveyed through the chamber by means which simultaneously causes them to rotate about their axes. In a first arrangement, Figs. 1 and 2, the cops or bobbins are placed within a hopper 1 from which they fall on to a comparatively slowly rotating disc 3. From this they pass to a more rapidly rotating disc 7, being held by a wall 8 at the innermost edge of the disc until the outlet channel 8a is reached. The cops or bobbins are turned so that they progress axially along the channel 8a and hence, due to the rotation of the disc 7 they also rotate about their axes. Water is sprayed on to them in the channel 8a. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, the cops or bobbins in the hopper 1 pass to a first conveyer belt 15a, thence to a more rapidly moving belt 15b and thence to a yet more rapidly moving belt 15c from which they pass, suitably spaced apart, into the treatment chamber 22. The cops or bobbins are directed to be moving axially before they pass into the chamber 22 which contains the spraying nozzles 10 and also a rotating drum 20 and an inclined guide rail 21 by means of which the cops or bobbins are made to progress from one end of the chamber 22 to the other and simultaneously rotate about their axes. In addition, a further set of spraying nozzles fed from a pipe 23 and spraying on to the drum along the line at which it makes contact with the cops or bobbins is provided to prevent threads from sticking to the drum. In one modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the belts 15 are replaced by a large number of rollers while in another, Fig. 8 (not shown), a hollow rotating cylinder serves both as the rotating drum 20 and as the treatment chamber 22, the cops passing within the cylinder. In a third <PICT:0739130/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0739130/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0739130/IV (c)/3> <PICT:0739130/IV (c)/4> embodiment, shown in plan view in Fig. 12, the cops or bobbins from the hopper 1 are guided across a conveyer belt 30 by means of guide rails 31 on to a second conveyer belt 34 which they cross at an angle so that rotation of the cops or bobbins also occurs. The cops or bobbins are sprayed while crossing the belt 34 and are then conveyed away by the belt 36.
