Abstract
738,876. Purifying water. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 12,1953 [June 11, 1952], No. 13197/53. Class 46. A method of reducing the effect of transitory temperature fluctuations in the water supply to a plant performing total de-salting of water comprises mixing the water supply with the contents of a water reservoir and feeding the plant from the reservoir. The invention includes apparatus comprising a reservoir to which the water to be totally de-salted is supplied, a mixing device in the reservoir and a plant for total desalting which is supplied from the reservoir. In one embodiment (not shown) the water. being supplied to the de-salting plant through a reservoir (having a mixing device) passes first through a valve controlled by a temperaturesensitive element located between the reservoir and the plant. As shown, water entering at 3 is cooled at 4 by heat exchange with cooler water leaving the plant 2 before passing to a reservoir 1 having a mixer 6. More cold water from a pipe 5 may be added either to the water from pipe 3 entering the reservoir (pipe 7) or directly to the reservoir (pipe 8) or between the reservoir and the plant 2. A valve 11 in the pipe 3 may be controlled by a heat-sensitive element 10. In Fig. 3 (not shown) condensate derived from the exhaust steam of a turbine is first cooled by heat exchange with cooler water from the de-salting plant and is then further cooled in a second heat exchanger before passing to the reservoir, where it is mixed with the contents, and thence to the de-salting plant.
