Abstract
The fuel jet nozzles 17 of a diesel engine 1 are cooled by liquid in a closed circuit 20 .. 23 separate from the engine coolant and cooled by heat exchange at 16 with uncooled coolant liquid leaving the engine. The cooling system for the engine comprises a heat exchanger 2 from which cooled coolant is supplied to the cylinders through an inlet conduit 3 by a pump 5. Heated coolant from the cylinders is discharged through a conduit 4 and returned to the heat exchanger 2 through the heat exchanger 16 through which passes a coil in the circuit 20 .. 23 cooling the fuel jets 17. The two cooling circuits are maintained under pressure by elevated tanks 15, 25. A pump 22 circulates the cooling water for the fuel jets, and valves 9, 14, 12 are provided in the engine cooling circuit. In a modification the heat exchanger 16 is arranged as a by-pass across a restriction in the pipe 4. During starting heating of the fuel jets takes place since the engine circuit heats up faster than the jet circuit.
