[Also in Group XXVIII] A contractible clamp for a pipe joint, particularly of the kind having channel-section clamp segments engaging the pipe flanges with a wedging action, has tensioning means engaging the opposed ends of the clamp segments 10, 11 including a number of dished spring washers 34 which are only partly compressed when the clamp is tightened, allowing for expansion of the coupled parts under working conditions. The spring has a load-deflection curve with a middle portion of substantially constant loading over a wide range of deflection. Each segment has terminal looped straps 15 secured thereto by saddle portions 18. A nut 16 and a sleeve 17 have pivot pins 25, 28 engaging the loops, and are carried by a bolt 24 passing through slots in the loops. Bracing yokes 26, 29 on nut and sleeve embrace the segments. The dished spring washers 34 are placed back to back (see Fig. 4) between the sleeve 17 and the bolt-head 30. The end washers engage wear-resisting, flat washers 35 or their own bases may be flattened. The bolt may be retained in the sleeve by a setscrew 39 engaging a reduced bolt section 38. A quick-release coupling comprises a T-headed bolt 241, Fig. 11, engaging a slot 48 in a U- shaped link 50 pivoted in a loop 15<SP>1</SP>. The bolt carries a T-headed sleeve 271 pivoted in a loop 15, the sleeve being formed from a flat stamping, its slit end being held by a cap 42. The spring washers are held between the sleeve 27<SP>1</SP> and a sleeve 43 by a nut 301. Angle brackers 26<SP>1</SP> on the clamp segments support the loop 15 and link 50. In a similar coupling without the quickrelease device, Fig. 8, (not shown) the T-head of the bolt engages a loop, and the angle brackets are secured to the loops. A tensioning- device for the form of coupling shown in Fig. 11 comprises a cap 59, Fig. 14, bearing against the sleeve 27<SP>1</SP> and receiving the reduced end 61<SP>1</SP> of a tubular nut 30<SP>11</SP> having a handle 63. The spring washers are held between the cap 59 and a shoulder 62 of the nut. This device is modified, Fig. 12 (not shown), by replacing the nut extension 61<SP>1</SP> by a plain sleeve, an ordinary hexagon nut engaging the sleeve and the end washer 34 to which the sleeve is secured.
