The definition obtainable when copying line drawings onto a relatively translucent lightsensitive silver halide direct positive or negative emulsion carried on a tracing linen support is improved by coating between the support and the emulsion layer a relatively opaque and insensitive silver halide emulsion layer. The latter must give a transmission density of not more than 0.05 when used with a direct positive emulsion developed to a background density of not greater than 0.05 or, when used with a negative emulsion, it must have a speed of not more than <SP>1</SP>/ 10 of the speed of the negative emulsion at a density of 1.0 above the fog density. The necessary low sensitivity of the intermediate layer can be obtained by using a desensitized emulsion.
