X-ray apparatus comprises a tower 4 supported perpendicularly at the side of an examination table 1, a carriage 3 movable along the tower, a pair of yoke arms 5 journalled on the carriage about a first horizontal axis 6 and carrying a frame 2 pivoted thereto about a second horizontal axis 10 higher than the axis 6, a lock to hold the frame horizontal, a counterweight 16 movable within the tower and fastened to one end of a flexible connecting member 17 passing through the upper end of tower, through a point on the carriage 3 near axis 10 but above axis 6, the other end of the member 17 being connected to the frame at axis 10, and means independent of gravity to maintain the member 17 in tension. The table 1 is assumed to be horizontal, but may be tilted. The flexible connecting member 17 may be a cord or the like guided by pulleys 18, 19, 21. A similar cord or the like 9 is fixed at one end to carriage 3 at 12, passes over a pulley 8 on an arm 7 fast with one of the arms 5, over a pulley 11 on carriage 3 and pulleys 13, 14 in the lower part of tower 4, and is connected at the other end to counterweight 16 by a spring 15. When the carriage is moved up and down the counterweight also moves. The frame 2, which supports a fluorescent screen or the like, has a tongue 2A held by a lock on the carriage to hold the frame horizontal. When the lock is released, the arms 5 and frame 2 fold against the tower under action of the counterweight. The tower may be mounted in known manner to move along and transversely of table 2, which may be tiltable.
