Baltimore, and Clyde N. Stover, Md., assignors to Western Electric Company, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 16, 1948, Serial No. 21,458
2 Claims.
This invention relates to tiltable tables, and has for an object thereof the provision of new and improved tiltable tables.
A tiltable table illustrating certain features of the invention may include a table top, means for mounting the table top for pivotal movement about a predetermined axis, a strap having the ends thereof connected to the table top on opposite sides of said axis, and means for engaging an intermediate portion of the strap to hold the table top against pivotal movement.
A complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from the following detailed description of a tiltable table forming one embodiment thereof, when read in conjunction with the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a table forming one embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the table.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, a cableforming table shown therein includes a reversible cable-forming board It, which is supported 'substantially along the center-line thereof by trunnions I2-l2 mounted in bearings I l-I4 sup ported by side frames 16-16. End straps 8-48 are fastened at the ends thereof by snaps 20-49 to eyes 22-22 secured to the cable-forming board, and the intermediate portions of the straps pass partially around snubbers 24-24 provided with guides 25-25. Adjustment screws 2il -28 are mounted adjustably on plates Bil-39, which are fastened by plates 32-32 and bolts 34-34 to rods 36-36 secured rigidly to the side frames. The adjus ment screws may be actuated to move the snubbers downwardly to tension the end straps Ill-l8 and to prevent movement of the strapsover the snubbers by friction between the snubbers and the straps from ordinary forces on the board.
Operation The cable-forming board 19 may be adjusted to any position from a horizontal position to substantially a vertical position by applying a strong pivoting force to the board to overcome the friction between the snubbers 24-46 and the end straps I3--l8, and pivoting the board ID to the desired position. However, the snubbers and straps hold the board against movement from ordinary forces incidental to cable-forming oper ations per se.
If it is desired to reverse the cable-forming board In 180 from the position in which it is shown in the drawing, for example, for a second shift of workers, the adjustment screws 28-48 are actuated to release the frictional engagement between the snubbers 24-44 and the end straps I 8-18, the snaps 22-20 are disconnected from the eyes 22-22, the board I!) is rotated through 180, and the snaps are then connected to the eyes most adjacent thereto. The board then is adjusted to any desired working position, if necessary, and the adjustment screws are actuated to move the snubbers into close frictional engagement with the end straps. v
The above-described table is substantially infinitely adjustable about the pivotal axis thereof, and it may be adjusted from one position to another by merely pivoting the board to a desired position. Furthermore, the cableforming board may be easily reversed for the use of operators of two different shifts of workers.
What is claimed is:
1. A tiltable table, which comprisesa table top, a pair of trunnions secured to opposite edges of the table top, means for supporting the trunnions rotatably through an angle greater than a pair of eyes secured to the table top at points on opposite sides of said trunnions, a strap, a pair of snaps connected to the ends of the strap for detachably connecting the strap to the eyes, a snubber having a curved portion for engaging a portion of the strap between the ends thereof, and adjustable means for pressing the snubber tightly against the strap to cause frictional engagement between the snubber and the strap.
2. A tiltable table, which comprises a table top, a pair of trunnions secured to opposite edges of the table top, means for ro'tatably supporting the trunnions, a pair of flexible straps, means for detachably connecting the ends of one of the straps to one edge of the table at points on opposite sides of the trunnion near that edge, means for detachably connecting the ends of the other strap to the opposite edge of the table top on opposite sides of the trunnion near that edge, a pair of snubbers positioned at opposite sides of the table top each having a curved portion for engaging the adjacent strap between the ends thereof, and means for pressing the snubbers tightly against the straps to cause frictional en gagement between the snubbers and the straps whereby-the table top is held in a predetermined position.
