- G. W. FISHER.
COMBINED PADSUPPORT AND PENCIL HOLDER.
Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
GEORGE WV. FISHER, OF KEENE, NEWV HAMPSHIRE.
COMBINED PAD-SUPPORT AND PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,668, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed April 18, 1891. Serial No. 389.434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Combined Pad-Support and Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined pencil and pad holder; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap, simple, and universally'adjustable support for retaininga pad and a pencil, said supports being especially adapted to be used as order-desks in connection with telephones, speaking-tubes, &c., and therefore adapted to be secured to any kind of a support, whether inclined, vertical, or horizontal, and to be capable of permitting of a prglper adjustmentfor writing purposes of the ta e.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pad and pencil holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of the ballreceiving sockets. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the support, the upper end of the same being shown in section, said support being secured to a horizontal base, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is afront elevation of the support, the same being secured to a vertical surface.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The standard of the support consists of an upper section 1 and a lower hollow section 2, the two sections being telescopically connected and adapted to slide one within the other. The lower hollow section has its upper end threaded exteriorly and at intervals split, as at 3, and upon said threaded portion is mounted a threaded collar or nut 4, having a perforation 5 in its periphery adapted to receive one end of a removable rod 6, serving as a wrench for tightening the collar upon the lower section, and thus clamping the upper end of said section upon the upper section, so that it will be observed the two sections are adjustable and the standard as a whole may be lengthened or shortened, as
which is passed from the under side into the socket, and at its inner end is provided with a concavity forming a continuation of the socket. The socket is also provided with a curved slot 14, and through the same extends a pin 15 from the plug, whereby the plug is limited in its movement by said pin abutting against the ends of the slot. The plug is also provided opposite the slot with a perforation 17, into which may be introduced one end of the removable wrench pin or rod 6, by which said plug may be loosened or tightened upon 1 the ball 7. The upper end of the upper section also terminates in a ball 7, which fits a socket 8, havinga base-plate 9, through which is passed screws 10 into the rest or table 16.
The socket is also provided with the slots 11 and 14, is internally threaded, and has fitted therein the threaded plug 13, from which projects the pin 15 through the slot 14, and is further provided with the opening 17, which receives the removable wrench-bar.
To the face of the rest or table and near one edge of the same is secured by screws 18 a spring-clip 19, through which passes a clamping-screw 20. A pad 21 is inserted under the clip and is secured in position by the clamping-screw passed through the clip and rest. A perforation 23 is formed at one side of the clip, and in the same is secureda metal bushing 24, from which at its rear edge extends a pair ofcurved spring-fingers 25. A pencil 26, when passed through the perforation, is gripped by the fingers, and, although easily withdrawn therefrom by hand, is prevented by said fingers from any accidental displace ment.
As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the rest may be secured to a flat or vertical base and tight ened to assume any position or angle desired. Such a rest will be found exceedingly useful in taking orders at telephones, &c.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the standard terminating at its ends in balls, of the upper and lower sockets having the slots 11 and 14: and the perforated securing-flange, the threaded plugs located in the sockets and bearing on the balls, each of said plugs being provided with a pin -receiving opening, and a pin mounted for movement between the ends of the slots 14, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the opposite telescopic sections, the lower one of which receives the upper one, is threaded at its upper end, slotted, and provided with a nut having a perforation, each of said sections terminating at its outer end in a ball, of upper and lower sockets for receiving the balls and having the slots 11 and 14 arranged at a right
