Description

(No Model.)
W. G GROOM. HAND SUPPORT FOR PENHOLDERS AND LEAD PENOILS.
Patented July 12, 1892.
WITNEEEEE.
ANN/ENTER.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILEY G. CROOM, OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN A. BRENNAN, OF SAME PLACE.
HAND-SUPPORT FOR PENHOLDERS AND LEAD -PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 478,787, dated July 12,1892. Application filed September 11, 1890. Serial No. 364,668- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILEY G. CROOM, of the city of Vicksburg and State of Mississippi, have invented certain Improvements in Hand- Supports for Penholders and Lead-Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure I is a View of the hand-support as it would appear in use. Fig. II is a view of the device without the hand. Fig. III is a sectional view of a part of the invention. Fig.
IV illustrates a modification in the construction of the device, as will hereinafter appear. Referring to Figs. I, II, and III, A is a sleeve in which the penholder or pencil R is inserted. The sleeve is shown in the drawings as open that is to say, it is made as a spring-clampso as to adjust itself to penholders and pencils of difierent sizes, after the manner of ordinary penholder-sleeves. O is a wire, which at its upper end is attached in any suitable manner to the sleeve A. The lower end of the wire 0 is coiled, so
as to form a finger-ring a, and is attached to the cup I). This cup contains the ball 0, which is adapted to turn freely therein as it is passed over the paper, which is shown in Fig. I and denoted by cl.
While it is preferred to have the ball to turn in the cup I) in order to reduce friction, a simple ball could be substituted for the cup and the movable ball without departing from the spirit of the invention, which aims to provide a penholding device with a knob adapted to rest on the paper and supportthe hand in writing.
In Fig. IV a double wire is used instead of a single one.
I claim as my invention 1. A penholder-rest consisting of an arm connected with the penholder and extending downward therefrom and provided with a ballbearing foot, substantially as specified.
2. A penholder rest consisting of a spring or yielding arm connected with the penholder and extending downward therefrom and provided with a ball-bearing foot, substantially as specified.
