736,758. Diaphragm fuel pumps. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION. Oct. 21, 1953 [Oct. 29, 1952], No. 29043/53. Class 102 (1). Irregularities in the flow through a reciprocating pump are reduced by arranging, adjacent the delivery valve 17, an air vessel comprising a chamber 7 containing a diaphragm 20 which is formed of flexible material and folded. The diaphragm shown is hat-shaped with a fold 44 that collapses as shown in Fig. 6. Air is enclosed between the diaphragm and its cover 22 which is sprung into position. A similar device may be arranged adjacent the inlet valve 16 or alternatively, as shown in Fig. 13, the chamber 8<SP>11</SP> has a partition 70 so that in whatever attitude the pump is placed, a pocket of air is trapped above the liquid in chamber 8<SP>11</SP>. The pump described has a diaphragm 33 actuated by a spring 34 on its delivery stroke and by a cam-actuated lever on its suction stroke.
