In a sliver forming machine wherein sliver is wound on a core, 21, Fig. 2, which is rotatable on a spindle locked between slidable members 39 which move against resistance as the roll increases, the spindle is locked between members 39 by members 37 rotatable in members 39 and engaging and retaining both ends of the spindle, a slot 27 being provided in each member 37 which when brought into line with a co-operating slot member 39 will allow the spindle to be withdrawn. As shown, the spindle comprises a sleeve 22 carried in bearings 33 on a shaft 29 having square ends 31 fitting in the slots 27 ; shaft 29 is inserted in slots 27 while they are aligned with the corresponding slots in the top of members 39, members 37 being then rotated by a handle 43 to bring the slots out of alignment and thereby lock the shaft to members 39. Members 39 are slidable in guides 19, Fig. 1, and are connected by chains 45 to a drum 47 braked by a band 49 weighted by a lever 51. On completion of a roll, members 37 are rotated to their original position, a pedal 53 is depressed to release the brake pressure and allow members 39 to fall under the action of a counterweight 55, and the spindle is withdrawn from the roll which is then removed.
