Abstract

1,197,713. Cleaning electro-statographic surfaces. SPERRY RAND CORP. June 15, 1967 [June 16, 1966], No. 26904/66. Heading G2H. An apparatus for cleaning an electro-statographic drum (71) Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises two spools 77, 78, Fig. 1A, rotatable on spindles 79 and 80 with a web 81 of cleaning fabric extending between the spools. A pressure roller 82 on a spindle 83 presses the web 81 against the drum. The spindle 83 is supported in mountings 84. The roller is urged into retracted position by springs 85. The spindles 80, 83 are driven through friction clutches e.g. (93) Fig. 2 (not shown). The drum is embodied in a copying machine as described in Specification 1, 187, 569. The mountings 84 are formed as cam followers co-operating with cams 125 on shaft 126 rotated manually. A further cam 128 on the shaft 126 co-operates with the main switch 125 of the machine. Thus, the machine is switched on when the web is pressed into cleaning relationship with the drum: a feeler 132 engages the fabric on the spool 77, such that when the spool is almost exhausted a pin 137 Fig. 3A, engages the upper end of slot 136 to rotate a trip disc 138, thereby releasing a striker 140. The striker has a tooth 144 which rides over a wheel 145, thereby causing the head 143 to strike a warning bell 142 repeatedly. The cleaning fabric may be spun rayon or it may be soft paper as described in Specification 1, 078, 128 and may be impregnated with a liquid e.g. an oil.
