Abstract

736,327. Sliding clasp fasteners. DESHAW, Z. Nov. 11, 1953 [Dec. 1, 1952], No. 30461/52. Class 44. A slider for a sliding clasp fastener comprises opposed shields 1, 12 to guide two stringers through the slider and an operating tab 22 pivoted about pin 24, the shields 1, 12 being assembled so as to permit spreading apart and stop means on the operating tab 22 co-operating with the outer surface of the adjacent shield and shaped to prevent spreading apart of the shields normally but to allow such spreading when the tab is pivoted to one extreme of its pivotal movement. The opposed shields 1, 12 are pivoted about pins 20 in the slot 15, of shield 12, which locate in bearing 6 in a riser portion 5 on the shield 1. Shield 12 is U-shaped and the open ends form jaws 18 that can be forced apart elastically. The open ends of pull tab 22 are formed with stop surfaces 25, coaxial with pivot pin 24 which locates in bearing 7 of the shield 1 and having radial recesses 26 (see Fig. 4). On assembly of the parts shown in Fig. 3, one or each of the side walls of the bearings 6 and 7 is peened over the pivot pin 20 or 24. The position of the pivot bearings is such that the stop surfaces 25 normally engage the shoulders 19 of shield 12 and prevent the shields spreading apart. When however the pull tab is rotated to position 221, Fig. 4, the shoulders 19 can enter the recesses 26 of the stop surfaces 25 and the shields may spread apart. In place of the pivot pin 20 the shields may be hinged by a spring tending to hold the shields together. The jaws 18 of shield 12 are forced apart by the wedge 8 when the shields are pivoted open until the jaws rest on the flat sides 7a of the wedge 8 : this produces a snap action in opening and closing the shields. The pull tab has a locking finger 29.
