[Class 44] The slider of a sliding clasp fastener, and particularly when for use with fabric-covered elements, is provided with an insert or inserts 16 disposed between the inner surface of wing 12, 13 and the fastener member (not shown). Both slider and insert may be of metallic or other material, but preferably the insert is of wear-resisting metal. As shown, the insert conforms to the shape of the usual slider channels and is retained in place by the wing flanges 15, 17 and wedge 14. The insert, besides acting as a liner, may be modified to provide, or attach, a pull-tab, or form a covering for the slider, or a guard to keep the fastener members from contacting with articles or material beneath the fastener members when in use. Fig. 7 shows a slider in which two of the insert ends project and are bent to provide pivot bearings 34, 35 for a wire pull-tap 36 shaped to surround the wing 30 when folded down, the free end of the tab having projections 37 which bite into the fabric covering of the fastener elements to hold the slider against accidental movement. In Fig. 8, the upper wing is provided with internal grooves 43, 44 in which the side limbs of a wire, string or like loop are slidably confined by the plate insert 45, the projecting ends of the loop, which form pull-tabs, being provided with beads 47, 48. In another arrangement the insert has perforated lugs which project through slots in the upper wing to provide pivot bearings for a pulltab and in a further form the pull-tab has a cross-bar pivotally engaged below a transverse kink in the insert exposed through a recess in which the tab lies flush when out of use. In this form, the tab is shown as having projections which engage between fastener members to hold the slider against accidental movement. Further forms are described using a fabric insert held by adhesive, or by the wedge 14 passing through an aperture in the insert. In one case, the ends of the fabric project from the slides to form pull-tabs, and in another the ends of the fabric overlap within the slider, the fabric forming a longitudinal loop round the slider wing, the exposed part of the fabric being loose to provide a pull-tab, or being in close contact with the outer surface of the wing to form a fabric covering therefor. A metal insert may be added between the fabric and the fastener members. Fig. 17 shows another arrangement in which the projecting ends 94 of an insert 95 applied to the inner surface of the lower wing 97 are upwardly bent to form a guard preventing materials &c. below the fastener when in use from entanglement with the fastener members.
