Abstract
548,452. Sliding-clasp fasteners. SAMSTEGMAN, E. March 6, 1941, No. 3080. [Class 44] In a sliding clasp fastener the slider of which has guard members serving to prevent the contents of a bag &c. or material lying beneath the fastener from becoming engaged in the fastener elements, that end of the slider c which leads in the opening movement has a downwardly bent guard e serving to depress the fastener elements a together with the contents of the bag &c. below the entrance level at that end of the slider. The other end of the slider may have a guard g which may be downwardly bent, as in Fig. 1, but preferably is upwardly bent as in Fig. 9. Figs. 1, 2 shown the guard g provided with a cross-bar f spanning the gap between the opened stringers. A similar bar h may be provided on the upper plate of the slider. The ends of the bars are rounded, or alternatively, the ends of bar h may be downwardly bent to limit lateral separation of the stringer by engagement with the fastener members. The edges of the lower plate of the slider at the left as seen in Fig. 1 taper to a point, not shown, disposed on the central line of the engaged elements. In a modification guards e, f are integrally joined by a bridge-piece extending over the upper plate of the slider and serving to receive the usual operating tab. In another modification the cross-bar f is replaced by an elongated wire loop placed with its greater dimension transverse with respect to the length of the stringer. Fig. 9 embodies this modification and shows one long side of the loop anchored in the curled end of guard g, its other long side contacting the lower surface of the slider. Fig. 9 also shows a slider locking device comprising a member o pivoted at p and biased by spring r so that a projection q is urged into engagement between consecutive elements a. A V-form member t has one limb slidable on the upper slider plate, an arm on the end of this limb engaging at s under member o which is raised to release position when member t is moved to the left by tab d engaging the other limb, which is of channel section to slidably embrace the wire bridge-piece i, thus preventing lateral displacement of member t. Tab d is a wire link bent as shown to rest snugly against guard e.
