Filed June 8, 1959, Ser. No. 818,657 1 Claim. (Cl. 24--85) Our invention relates to cloth fastening devices and is directed particularly to a fastening clip for temporarily securing the overlapping corner portions of diapers together when diapering an infant.

Diaper pins having sharp points are commonly used to fasten diapers, and though various safety diaper pins have been designed to prevent accidental opening, such pins are far from accident-proof. Moreover, great care has to be exercised in using such pins.

It is accordingly the principal object of my invention to provide an improved fastening device or clip for diapers and other cloth fastening purposes which has no sharp projecting points and which therefore cannot accidently cause injury by sticking the skin.

Another object is to provide a fastening clip of the character described which can easily be applied and which will hold the overlapped and clipped cloth portions securely together.

Still another object is to provide a fastening clip of the above nature which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and long-wearing and dependable in use.

Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fastening clip embodying the invention shown in use in fastening together overlapping portions of a diaper;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of thefastening clip;

Fig. 3 is bottom view thereof;

Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the fastening clip taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 in the direction of the arrows; and

Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-sectional view thereof taken along the line 55 of Fig. 4 in the direction of the arrows.

Referring now in detail to the drawings wherein like references denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, our improved fastening clip is formed of a strip of resilient metal, such as spring steel, and has a flat bottom portion integrally formed with a folded-over top portion 11 to provide a U-shaped loop portion 11a at one end. The free end of the top portion 11 is inclined inwardly to approach the upper surface of the bottom portion 10 in spaced relation thereto. The outer extremity of the top portion 11 is curved upwardly and rounded at the corners, as indicated at 12 in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, for the purpose hereinafter appearing.

As best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 the bottom portion 10 of the clip is formed with two pairs of aligned, longitudinally spaced arcuate protrusions 13, 13 and 14, 14, respectively, which are conveniently struck inwardly from the underside of said bottom portion. The top portion 11 of the clip is provided with an inwardly-struck rectangular tongue member 15 which, as best illustrated in Fig. 4, extends into the space between the arcuate pro trusions 13, 13 of the bottom portion 11, the free end of said tongue extending generally toward the loop 11a of the clip. The top portion 11 is further provided with an inwardly struck arcuate protrusion 16 which, as best illustrated in Figs. 4 and S, dips centrally between innermost portions of the arcuate protrusions 14, 14 in the bottom portion 11.

Means is provided for anchoring a shirt tab to the clip in addition to its use as a diaper fastener. To this end, a thin elongated strip 17 is struck from central longitudinal portions of the bottom portion 10 and loop portion 11a of the clip. The strip 17 remains joined with the top portion 11 near the inner end thereof and is bent outwardly and backwardly in spaced relation over said top portion. The strip 17 is formed with a central inwardly-bent arcuate portion 18 which extends into the opening in the top portion 11 left by the inwardly-struck arcuate protrusion 16 thereof. The strip 17 terminates in a pointed end portion 19 which overlies the top portion 11 of the clip in special parallel relation at a position between the protrusion 16 and tongue member 15 thereof.

In use the clip will be pushed down over the overlapped ends of the diaper D or other end sections of material to be clipped together, as illustrated in Fig. l. The resiliency of the clip will press the overlapped portions of the material together, clamping them in place. The tongue 15 and arcuate protrusion 16 of the top portion 11 will at the same time press spaced portions of the overlapped material down into the longitudinal openings between the pairs of arcuate protrusions 13, 13 and 14, 14, respectively, thereby frictionally preventing relative sliding between the material and the clip, either laterally or longitudinally. When used in diapering infants, the pointed end portion 19 of the strip 17 provides a convenient hook for the tabs usually furnished at each side at the lower end of an infants shirt.

While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied in practice, it is to be understood that this form is presented by way of example only and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:

A diaper clip comprising a strip of spring metal of U-shape providing a loop portion at one end and opposed, spaced top and bottom portions extending toward each other, a first pair of laterally spaced inwardly directed arcuate protrusions struck in said bottom portion in the outer end portion thereof, a second pair of laterally spaced inwardly directed arcuate protrusions struck in said bottom portion in the inner end portion thereof, a

tongue member struck from said top portion and extending generally in the direction of said loop portion in the space between said first pair of arcuate protrusions, a single protrusion struck in said top portion and extending inwardly into the space between said second pair of arcuate protrusions an elongated pin struck from said strip and overlying said top portion and having an inwardly directed central portion extending into the opening left by and in substantially parallel relation to the inwardly struck single protrusion, and an inwardly and angularly directed pointed end for said pin in abutting relation to the outer surface of said top portion, said pin extending generally in a direction away from said loop portion.
