Description

June 6, 1950 E. E. BOGENBERGER SLIDER FOR SEPARABLE SLIDE FASTENERS Filed March 30, 1946 Patented June 6, ..1950
SLIDER FOR SEPARABLEv SLIDE FASTNERS Esther E. .Bogenbergen Milwaukee, Wis., assgnor of iftyper cent to Joseph J. Helby, Milwaukee,
Wis.
Application March so, 1946, seria1N0-e5s-,493
l This invention relates to improvements in separable fasteners', particularly to .fasteners of the interdigitating type such as shownin my previously issued Letters Patent No. 2,278,388, dated March 31, 1942.
v An object of the invention is to providea sep,- arable fastener whose casing ,or interdigitator is so-constructed and designed thatthesame can be slid over and along a surface without impedance from existing irregularities or any which may occur therein, and without liab-ility of catching portions of suchirregularities or foreign ob1 jects (including parts of the anatomy) .between the interdigitating separable fastener elements during a closing operation thereof, as well as during their disengagement or ffastener opening during sliding of the casing in an opposite di.-
rection.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a casing for slide separable fasteners, Aof the above indicated type, so constructed that its normally leading end will deflect, from .its path of travel, any andall foreign objects and/or portions thereof, hence, preventing their becoming caught or engaged between the interdigitated fastener elements with damage to both objects or portions thereof and the fastener elements. I .Yet another object of the invention is to provide a separable fastener possessed of durability, operational efciency, and simple construction,- capable ofbeing effected by and with mass production methods and apparatus, with maximum cost economies. v.
A further and equally important object of the invention is to provide a; separable fastener casing or interdigitator wherein the separable fastener elements, in the course of being interengaged thereby, will be caused to enter the normally leading end of the same at points positively removed or spaced from Ya surface over which said casing is being slidingly moved, such surface spaced entry of the fastener elements into the casing being further accentuated by the imparting of an outward pull to the casing caused by the novel placement or connection of a finger engaged piece with said casing, aswell as like spacing when the casing is slid in `an opposite direction to effect disengagement between the previously interengaged fastener elements. n
The foregoing, as well as other objects, advantages and meritorious teachings of my invention, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the following detaileddisclosure thereof, when taken in conjunction with the accompany; ing drawings, it being understoodthat-the form of invention presented herein is precise and what is now considered to be the best mode of embodying itsfprinciples, but that modifications and changes'may be made in specific embodiments withoutrdeparting from its essential features. AIndahe drawings: l
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved fastener in operative position with relation to the cooperative fastener elements.
- :Figure 2-is a rear elevation of the same. 1 Figure 3 is a longitudinal section takenon. the line 3 3 of Figurev 1, ,r Figure 4 is a side elevation of the fastener, showing the nger piece in its open position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the fastener with the nger piece in raised or open position, and-illustrating: the formation. of said fastener from the normally front or forward side thereof, and Figure 6 is asimilar view taken from the back orrearward side of the fastener. ,Referring in detail vto the drawings, the improved fastener, generally, comprises a, slide body orzcasingconsisting of front and back sides I andi. and a combined vfinger engaging and fastenerelement .locking piece 3. Said casingis adaptedtofunction orservevas an interdigitator for cooperable oppositely disposed fastener elements :l fixedly mounted, in equi-spaced relation, on the adjacent .marginal portions of tapes 5, or' their equivalents, which, in turn, are to be secured by appropriate -means to pieces of material, etc. By sliding the casing I-2 in a pre` determined direction, the opposed rows of fastener velements 4 will be and are brought in interlocking .(interdigitating) relation, hence, interconnecting thematerial pieces 6. And by they same token, by the sliding retraction of said casing, the opposed rows of fastener elements 4 aredisengaged orseparated, thereby disconnect-v ing the pieces 6. The fastener elements, as is known in the art, canbe made of metal, plastic or other suciently strong and durable material, as conditions or preference may dictate.
,I The fastener casing, made of metal, plastic or. other. suitable material, consists, as above stated, of front and .back sides l and 2.
The front side I has inwardly flanged gener# ally longitudinal sides 1, the normally forward" o rv leading portions of which are divergent, asv will be seen on reference to Figures 1 and 5'of.
the` accompanying drawings, thus, provide' a greater areafor width to its normally forward,
reduced or convergent, as indicated at 8, and is formed or otherwise provided with a longitudinally directed dovetail shaped tongue 9, whose outer and free end portion is angularly and outwardly bent, as at l0, and slotted (see Figures 3 and 4) for a purpose hereinafter described.
An intermediate and somewhat rearward portion of the front side of the fslifde casing has a nger Il strukoutwardly at v`substantially right angles therefrom.
The slide casing back side 2, as will be abpreciated by artisans skilled in theart, constitutes the runner or surface contat'neiibr'l Mtleiii'- proved fastener. It is formed with r(."nitwardly flanged generally longitudin'alsides l2, wlio'sesn'ormally forward or leading portions are divergent (see Figures 2 and 6), and so, providaangreater area or width to its normally forwrdption, generally corresponding to though larger "than that of the corresponding forward portion of the front vside, i. Theiorwardendofthe back side 21s somewhat reduced or convergenaas at I3, and has aniintermediately, locatedmoutwardly or right ahgularly disposed'slotted tongue I4 formed or otherwise providedto Athesame.. 'Ih'istongue lll, as will be seen on reference to the accompanying drawings, is positioned directly adjacent ,and substantially parallel tothe tongueportion I0 of the front side l. L. 4
If desired, the slotted uportions 9 and M'ni'ay be.joined,or united 'by 'solder or other imge'ahs. However, it is entirely feasiblean'd practicable, fromja viewpoint Aof stamping production, that they .may be integral, i. e.,'the frontandback sides.| and 2, may be made froideJ single piece of material, andoby suitable operations, their respective tongues 9 and lli may befo'r'me'd or, constituted, as hereinbefore described, and'. then, transversely bent or stamped intermediately; of themselves into .the .formatonaor relationship shown in Figures '1, 4, 5 and' 'of the drawings.
The convergent "leading end. fl 3 of the backside 2, has opposed portionsofits flanges l2 cut away,`as indicated at l5, it being noted'that said cutaway portions, by reason of the convergent forward or' leading endof said side 2,*areV divergently arranged. These divergent cut away portions or ways l5, as shown in Eigur'e'si 1,'2 andB of the drawings,'serve`to v.permit slidalle introduction ror engagement'ofthe'oppose'd" rows of. cooperable fastener' elements 1i thereinand their longitudinal sliding movement-#through the same from the' rearward 'or 'trailingendbf the "slide fastener casing l-2 To 'effect individuar and relatve1y'"spaed'and converging entry 'O f the *pDorsd rows Ffof fastener Velements Il 'intov the "slide"- 'fastener casing via )the dverg'ht'ways I5' formedV in "the leading vend ofits back side `2, `and"to"ersure proper relative positioning and interdigitation of said fastener elements 4 as they enter intds'aid'easing V`ia`said ways` see Figure l),fthe'noir'lally` forwardA portion Iof said' ba'cks'ide'jZ has 'an 'inwardly stamped `or depressed :portion forming"'r`tli '6pposite orI inner face'theieof'a'triangularl `p`shapedL guide lug orfeler'nentfl 62 whjseopp'o'r" 1 indicated in Figures fand' (i 'oflt'hei'aclcdrpanyinedrawines are .slibtfaiilhv ialle'io ibrp'os'itef'sides fof the "diverge'ritway by adiaentporioes, of the basking ingitudinai jnanges li.` Thus-finer ada n ways arelirvidedie' c fastener elements fijas'n heyev terv into a tween thesides` Land' v 2 fof th "s lidejifastener during sliding movement of thilatten The normally forward and wider portion of the longitudinaly flanged back side 2, and particularly, that portion of the same having the guide lug I6 formed therein, as above described, is outwardly and transversely curved, as indicated at l'l.
