Abstract

655,997. Sliding-clasp fasteners. MODREY PATENTS CORPORATION. Dec. 15 1948 No. 32443. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1947. [Class 44] In a locking slider for a sliding clasp fastener of the type in which a movable locking member on the slider body engages between the fastener elements, a guard member is provided to guard access to the locking member having an opening for the insertion of a key and a shaped portion co-operating with a correspondingly shaped portion on the key so as to permit movement of the key to release the locking member. In the form of Figs. 1 and 5 the locking member 38 comprises a semi-circular body 39 having a circumferential flange 40, an extension 45 engaging under the top plate of the slider and a locking tooth 42 which when the locking member is tilted by the pressure of a nose 46 against the elements 14 engages between the elements to lock the slider. The guard member 50 is of semi-cylindrical form and has opposite openings 51 to receive the jaws of a scissors-like key 25, Fig. 2, and the side walls of the guard have circular grooves 53 to receive the corresponding teeth 57, 58 on the key jaws. The key jaws 26, 27 are pivoted together at 9 and spring loaded to the closed position. They are adapted to be spread by pressure on the tab-ends 28, 29 of the key so that the hooked ends 59, 60 may be inserted through the openings 51. The hook parts 61, 62 on the key are received in a, gap 43 in the flange 40 on the locking member and are adapted when the key is lifted as in Fig. 5 to engage the. flange and displace the locking member to the released position. The slider may then be moved by using the key as a pull-tab. In another form the flange 40 fits closely over the operative ends of the key jaws and sufficient clearance is provided between the circular grooves in the guard and the corresponding teeth on the key to allow movement of the key when pulled to release the locking member. In the form of Figs. 8, 9 the key 101 is inserted through a rectangular slot 98 in the end of the guard 96. Internal circular ribs 99 on the side walls of the guard fit corresponding grooves 103, 104 in the sides of the key. A T-shaped slot 105 in the end of the key fits over the body plate 39 of the locking element and the flange 40 is engaged by the cross-slot when the key is lifted. The flange 40 is tapered so that this engagement causes displacement of the locking member to the release position. The guard has a circumferential slot 97 to pass the key in the lifting movement those parts of the guard adjacent the slot being received in the side slots 102 of the key. The key is prevented from falling out of the slider in the normal position by a leaf spring 110 which lifts it to engage the ward ribs 99. In the form of Figs 10, 11, the locking member 120 consists of a blade spring 121 fastened at 122 and carrying teeth 123. The end of the spring is bent back to form a loop 125, the edges 125<1> of which project for engagement with shoulders on the key 130. A guard member 116 of rectangular section has a slot 119 formed in the upper face to permit insertion of the key, the slot having side notches 129 to fit corresponding teeth 131, 133 on the key. The key is adapted to be inserted from the end and tilted about the end lugs 135 as pivots, the parts 138 engaging under the spring edges 125<1> to release the locking member. As before the key is retained in the lock in the normal position by the blade spring 121. A cover 140 may be provided to enclose the locking member and guard. The cover is slotted at 141 to pass the neck 142 of the key, part of the material from the slot being bent to form an inside cover 143 for the end of the locking member.
