Abstract
736,229. Making frangible diaphragms. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd. Oct. 20, 1953 [Nov. 12, 1952], No. 28463/52. Class 83 (2). A process for the manufacture of a ductile metal frangible diaphragm for use in a safety device comprises subjecting the diaphragm to a short-acting positive pressure differential which is at least 90 per cent of the positive pressure differential at which the diaphragm would rupture. The diaphragm may initially be made by die pressing or by the action of fluid pressure on a thin sheet of not more than 0.025 inches in thickness of ductile metal, e.g. nickel, silver, copper, aluminium, stainless steel and other alloys. The preformed diaphragm is then subjected by the action of fluid pressure on its concave surface to said short-acting pressure differential approximately 2 seconds while its convex surface is open to the atmosphere. Alternatively, the diaphragm may be formed directly by the action of said fluid pressure differential on a sheet of ductile metal in a mould. In an embodiment a silver domeshaped frangible diaphragm of 1 inch diameter is formed from foil 0.004 inches thick by clamping the foil in a circular holder and applying to one side thereof a pressure of 306 p.s.i. which is 92.5 per cent of the normal bursting pressure for two seconds.
